JITT Selection Procedures

back

The 2011 JIT will select athletes for a number of events:
The U-19 Trial events will be used to select athletes for the team and individual events for the U-19 BWF World Junior Championships (Oct 28-Nov 6, 2011 at Taipei, Taiwan). The Team will comprise four boys and four girls. Athletes for the individual events will compete in the main draw only (there is no consolation event).
The U-19 Trial events will be used to select athletes for the team and individual events for the U-19 events at the Pan American Junior Championships (July 24-31, 2011 at Kingston, Jamaica). The team will comprise four boys and four girls (and they may be a different group of athletes than the team for World Junior Championships). Athletes for the individual events will compete in the main draw and the consolation.
The U-17, U-15, U-13, and U-11 Trial events will be used to select Athletes for the U-17, U-15, U-13, and U-11 events at the Pan American Junior Championship. They will compete only in the individual events for their age group. There is no inter-team event for these age groups. Athletes will compete in the main draw and consolation (time permitting).
New development – An U-17 Team will be selected from the U-17 Trial events.
Current Proposal (depending on the funding available)–
1) time - one day travel, one day orientation/adjustment, 1-2 days competition team format, 3-4 days training, 1-2 days competition team format, total 8-11 days
2) possible locations
a. Hong Kong & Guang Zhou
b. Singapore & Malaysia
3) Staff - one male and one female coach
4) Estimated cost $1600-$1800 per athlete & $2000 per coach
For the individual events in both the World Junior Championships and Pan American Junior Championships, the US may enter 4 Boy’s Singles, 4 Girl’s Singles, 2 Boy’s Doubles, 2 Girl’s Doubles, and 4 Mixed Doubles.
Athletes desiring to compete in an Individual event(s) in any age group must submit a JIT entry form including those events, even if not competing for the Team(s). Please note: There is no USAB funding designated for this International event.
The following criteria will be used in the team selection procedure:
1. The winners of GS, BS, GD, BD, and XD from JIT are selected first.
2. Doubles pairs are selected together. If one athlete of a winning Doubles pair is unable to compete, the other athlete is consequently not selected (but may be selected by step 4 below)
3. If for either boys or girls the above procedure does not yield enough athletes, the Singles runner-up at JIT is selected next. If for either boys or girls the above procedure does not yield enough athletes, the next athlete(s) is(are) selected in order of their JIT scoring total across all three events –
a. Singles, Doubles, and Mixed Doubles – using the Junior National Team scoring:
b. Each 1st Place = 30 points
c. Each 2nd Place = 15 points
d. Each 3rd Place = 7.5 points
e. Each 4th Place = 5 points
f. Each 5th Place = 3 points
g. Each 6th Place = 2 points
h. Each 7th or 8th Place = 1 point
4. In the event of a scoring tie with fewer spots available, the singles head-to-head result in JIT will be used to select the next player. If there is no singles head-to-head result, then the doubles (Boys or Girls) head-to-head JIT result will be used. In the case of neither a singles nor doubles head-to-head result being available then the Mixed Doubles head-to-head JIT result will be used. If there is still a tie, then a coin toss(es) will be used to select among the tied athletes.
5. Any remaining Team spots after all the JIT results are exhausted will not be filled.
6. The Team may be different for the Pan Am and World Junior Championships.
7. Singles events will be Pool Play per USA Badminton Regulations. Doubles events will be Pool Play unless the number of entries is too many, in which case an Elimination format will be used for the events. USAB’s pool play rules require all of the athlete’s pool matches have to be completed or none will be counted.
8. Team members receive no priorities in the individual entries.
9. The top 4 finishers in singles will have first priority to enter that individual event. If there are any openings, then the next player with the highest rank order from the Trial results in singles will make that individual event.
10. The top 2 pair finishers in doubles will have first priority to enter that event. If there are any openings, then the next team with the highest rank order from the Trial results in doubles will make that event. Doubles teams qualify as a pair – if one player cannot make it, then his/her partner loses the spot as well.
11. The top 4 pair finishers in Mixed Doubles will have first priority to enter that event. If there are any openings, then the next team with the highest rank order from the Trial results in Mixed Doubles will make that event. Mixed Doubles teams qualify as a pair – if one player cannot make it, then the partner loses the spot as well.
12. If all the Trial results/ranking for a given age group event have been used and there are still additional spots available then the lower age group results can be used to select players from the lower age group to fill the spots.
13. If all Trial results/rankings have been used and there are still additional spots, the USAB Junior committee shall have the discretion to fill the vacant spots. The Trial results will be used for the rank order of the players/teams and be submitted to the Badminton Pan America or the BWF.
14. In the case of injury arising after an athlete has been selected, but prior to departure, USA Badminton reserves the right to revoke selection of the athlete if, in USA Badminton’s sole discretion, the athlete’s or the team performance will be compromised. USA Badminton reserves the right to select a player/pair based on the criteria above to replace the injured athlete(s).
15. The injured player must have demonstrated extraordinary results prior to or after the injury, a Doctor’s certificate attesting full recovery, information from the athlete’s personal coach confirming return to full capability, and provide conclusive evidence and proof that they would surpass other potential candidates.

16. Official selection to the delegation is through written or electronic personal correspondence from USA Badminton. All verbal discussion of player selection is unofficial.
17. All athletes qualified for a given event have to respond to USA Badminton through written or electronic correspondence with a decision 7 days after the receipts of the invitation to the delegation. Failure to comply will lead to the athlete’s removal from the delegation and replacement by the next available athlete based on the Junior International Trial results.

18. Athletes must be members in good standing with USA Badminton.
19. Athletes must have paid all outstanding invoices to USAB at least 30 days prior to the submission of the entry forms of the Pan American Junior Championship and the BWF World Junior Championship.
20. Athletes must have signed and returned the USA Badminton Code Of Conduct Agreement and the Parental/Guardian Permission and Liability agreement at least 30 days prior to submission of the entry forms of the Pan American Junior Championship and the BWF World Junior Championship.
21. Athletes must meet all eligibility requirements for team participation under the Badminton Pan America rules and regulations for the Pan American Junior Championships.
22. Athletes qualified for the U19 team must agree to participate in any USA Badminton designated camps from July 4- 7, 2011 at Orange County Badminton Club (OCBC) related to this event. Failure to comply will lead to removal from the delegation.
